Fall Sampler Cross Stitch

Celebrate the beauty of autumn with this charming Fall Sampler cross stitch pattern. This small design combines some of the season’s favorite symbols—an old-fashioned cottage, cheerful sunflower, colorful maple leaf, pumpkins, acorn, and a sweet lantern—with the word FALL stitched across the center. The warm autumn colors make it a wonderful project for stitching during September, October, and November.

This sampler is small enough to finish without a huge time commitment, making it a great choice for both newer stitchers and experienced cross stitchers looking for a relaxing seasonal project. Stitch it on white or cream Aida cloth and display it in a wooden embroidery hoop for an easy piece of fall décor.

You can use the finished sampler to decorate a shelf, coffee table, entryway, craft room, or autumn display. It would also make a thoughtful handmade gift for a friend who loves fall and cross stitch.

Stitching the Fall Sampler

Start by finding the center of your fabric and the center of the design. From there, work outward so you can keep the sampler centered.

You can stitch the motifs individually or work across the design in sections. The large FALL lettering makes a good central starting point, followed by the pumpkin, acorn, lantern, and other autumn motifs.

For a traditional look, use two strands of embroidery floss over one or two fabric threads, depending on your fabric count and preferred coverage.

When you’re finished, wash and press your stitching if needed, then place it in a small embroidery hoop. The hoop itself can become part of the finished display, making this an especially easy project to finish and decorate with.

How to Display Your Finished Sampler

A finished fall sampler looks beautiful in a simple wooden hoop. You can also:

  • Place it on a fall tiered tray
  • Add it to an autumn gallery wall
  • Display it on a bookshelf
  • Use it as part of a Thanksgiving decoration
  • Prop it beside pumpkins and fall leaves
  • Give it as a handmade fall gift

A small hoop also makes the finished piece easy to change out with other seasonal cross stitch designs throughout the year.

14-count Aida is a great choice for this design and is especially easy for beginners. You can use 16-count or 18-count Aida if you prefer a smaller finished piece.

Can I use different colors?

Absolutely! Fall is perfect for experimenting with color. Try deeper burgundy, mustard yellow, olive green, rust, or brown to coordinate with your home décor.
